In the little port town of Grimmswick, there lived a quiet young woman named Eleanor Preece. She never laughed, and rarely spoke, but was admired for her skill in making fine dresses. Her work was so precise that townsfolk said the seams in her gowns were straighter than the church steeple.
One rainy evening, a customer noticed something odd. Eleanor always stitched in silence, but occasionally she would tilt her head as though listening… and her needle would move of its own accord, as if following whispered instructions.
No one knew that Eleanor was not alone. Beneath the fabric of her dresses lived the soul of her late father — a cruel puppeteer who had been cursed by a traveling fortune-teller. When he died, his spirit had nowhere to go but into the cloth she worked with. Piece by piece, he grew stronger, hiding his face in the folds and hems, waiting for the day he could tear his way free.
They say Eleanor stitched faster each year, as if trying to trap him. But at night, if you pass the workshop, you might hear a muffled voice behind the locked door — a voice coaxing her to put down the needle… just long enough to let him out.
