In the winter of 1887, Captain Alistair Crowcombe returned alone from the whaling vessel Belladonna, its crew vanished without trace. Witnesses swore he stepped onto the dock at Whitby with that strange circlet already clasped to his brow — a living creature whose tentacles pulsed faintly, as though tasting the air.

Crowcombe would not speak of the voyage, save to murmur that they had "sailed beyond the edges of the charted sea." His eyes took on a tidewater gleam, and the harbor’s gulls grew silent when he passed. Within weeks, the tides began to rise at odd hours, and those who ventured into the fog reported hearing the beating of colossal wings beneath the waves.

No one dared remove the creature from his head, for it seemed to tighten when approached, and the Captain would only smile thinly and whisper: "It has chosen me."
