In the early days of the Ether Age, Miss Astrid Vang was among the first to volunteer for the “Larm Conduit” — an experimental device said to allow two minds to converse across oceans without the inconvenience of ships, cables, or time. The procedure was painless, though it did leave one with a small chrome port behind the ear and a tendency to hum when near telegraph lines.

Her first transmission came one rain-slick evening in Bergen:
“Good evening, is this Boston?”

From thousands of miles away, a voice replied, smooth as varnished mahogany:
“Indeed it is, madam. And may I say, your thoughts arrive in perfect clarity.”

They spoke every night after that, of science, of art, and once, daringly, of love. Whether they ever met in person, the records do not say — but Astrid’s portrait, with its slender, glinting cables, has been found tucked away in more than one desk drawer, half a world apart.
