Edward “Flagstaff” Pemberton
Born into Boston’s genteel society in 1871, Edward was known for his impeccable grooming, quiet demeanor, and the inexplicable presence of tiny adventurers scaling his person at any given moment. Society matrons whispered over tea that the “Pemberton Climbers” were hallucinations caused by his fondness for absinthe, while others insisted they were explorers from “the microverse,” using Edward’s well-oiled hair as their Everest.
Far from being embarrassed, Edward welcomed them. He carried a miniature picnic set in his breast pocket, should they require refreshments mid-ascent, and even had his tailor install tiny footholds into his collars. Though he never spoke of how they arrived—or why they never left—he would simply smile and say, “Boston is a fine city, but for some, the view is better from the top.”
