These images were created when Mike Wellins alters a thriftstore or yardsale painting, by adding new stuff directly on the painting with acrylic paints. Mike calls it NERC.
NERC stands for Non-elective Retroactive Collaboration, whereby production art is re-purposed to give new meaning and revitalized imagery. Some would say, that creating NERC pieces is stealing or taking someone else's art, others say it's a form of mockery, still other's say nothing at all. But suffice to say that NERC is based on 3 famous, well known and acknowledged principles of art. 1. Finders keepers. 2. Snooze you lose. 3. What's the big deal? You were going to just chuck it out anyway. 4. Art is anything you can get away with. Whenever possible, the first artist is always credited.
